EAST LANSING, Mich. – William Buford made a high-arcing jumper from the top of the key with 1 second left, lifting No. 10 Ohio State to a 72-70 win over No. 5 Michigan State on Sunday, forging a three-way tie for the Big Ten title.
The Buckeyes (25-6, 13-5) earned a share of their third straight conference championship and forced the Spartans (24-7, 13-5) to settle for having a piece of it along with No. 13 Michigan.
The Wolverines, who won their first Big Ten title since 1986, watched their rivals play from the school’s basketball facility in Ann Arbor after winning at Penn State earlier in the day.
Michigan State led by as many as 15 points in the first half, but couldn’t put away the Buckeyes.
Draymond Green had a shot to put the Spartans ahead in his final home game, but missed a long fadeaway from the right wing with 32 seconds left.
(1) KENTUCKY 74, (16) FLORIDA 59: Freshman Anthony Davis had 22 points as the Wildcats (30-1, 16-0) capped a perfect SEC season by beating the host Gators (22-9, 10-6).
(13) MICHIGAN 71, PENN ST. 65: Trey Burke scored 19 points and Michigan (23-8, 13-5 Big Ten) shot 59 percent from the field in beating Penn State (12-19, 4-14) at State College, Pa.
(14) WISCONSIN 70, ILLINOIS 56: Senior Jordan Taylor scored 16 points in his final home game as Wisconsin (23-8, 12-6 Big Ten) topped Illinois (17-14, 6-12).
(18) INDIANA 85, PURDUE 74: Christian Watford scored 19 points, leading Indiana (24-7, 11-7 Big Ten) over Purdue (20-11, 10-8) at Bloomington, Ind.
(22) FLORIDA ST. 80, CLEMSON 72: Michael Snaer scored a career-high 23 points as Florida State (21-9, 12-4 ACC) topped visiting Clemson (16-14, 8-8).
(24) VIRGINIA 75, MARYLAND 72: Mike Scott had a career-high 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Sammy Zeglinski scored 20 points as Virginia (22-8, 9-7 ACC) overcame a late collapse in regulation to beat host Maryland (16-14, 6-10) in overtime.
(25) CREIGHTON 83, ILLINOIS ST. 79: Doug McDermott had 33 points and Antoine Young scored eight of his 14 in overtime as Creighton (28-5) survived an upset bid in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament final in beating Illinois State (20-13) at St. Louis.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(3) NOTRE DAME 69, DEPAUL 54: Devereaux Peters had 16 points to lead Notre Dame (29-2) over DePaul (22-10) in the Big East quarterfinals at Hartford, Conn.
(4) CONNECTICUT 49, (23) RUTGERS 34: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half and Connecticut (27-4) beat Rutgers (22-9) in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament at Hartford, Conn.
(6) MARYLAND 68, (15) GEORGIA TECH 65: Alyssa Thomas scored a career-high 29 points and Maryland (28-4) beat Georgia Tech (24-8) to win the ACC tournament championship at Greensboro, N.C.
BASEBALL
FLORIDA STATE SWEEPS MAINE: The Seminoles (9-1) put together several multiple-run innings in both games, winning the opener 18-2 and the second game 10-0 against the Black Bears (3-5) at Tallahassee, Fla.
Colin Gay and Troy Black each had two hits for Maine in the opener.
Michael Fransoso had two hits, including a double, in the second game.
SUNY-OLD WESTBURY 12, SOUTHERN MAINE 11: The Panthers (5-2) scored nine runs over the final three innings to rally past the Huskies (1-1) at Yaphank, N.Y.
SOFTBALL
UC-DAVIS 2, MAINE 0: Hilary Kane had two hits and Ashley Kelley pitched a complete game for the Black Bears, but the Aggies scored single runs in the second and seventh innings to win at Riverside, Calif.
