AUGUSTA (AP) — Former Republican state Sen. Rick Bennett has formally announced that he intends to run for U.S. Senate.
The Maine seat opened when Republican U. S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced last week that she will not run for re-election.
The state GOP circulated an email on behalf of Bennett on Sunday in his bid to get the required 2,000 signatures to get on the ballot, following his formal announcement Friday.
Bennett says he is running because the nation is at a crossroads.
The state GOP also announced that former Maine Secretary of State and Vietnam War veteran Markham Gartley has launched a campaign for the state’s first congressional district.
Gartley, a former Democrat, describes himself as a “common sense conservative.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
