LEWISTON — Brandon Tuttle scored his second goal of the game with less than six minutes left to propel No. 2 Falmouth to a 5-3 win against No. 3 Scarborough in a Western Class A semifinal at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday night.

The Yachtsmen will play top-seeded Thornton Academy, the defending state champion, for the regional championship at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Colisee.

It was the third game of the season between Scarborough and Falmouth, and neither team was able to generate much offense. The teams split their two regular-season games.

“I don’t care who you play, every team has got skilled players who can hurt you,” Falmouth Coach Deron Barton said. ” You give them time and space, and it builds their confidence, and once they have confidence anything is possible. We try to take their time and space away. We did a pretty good job of that.”

It was Tuttle’s first game in the lineup after a five-game suspension for violating school policy.

“No question he’s an impact player for us,” Barton said.

The teams exchanged power-play goals late in the first period, which ended tied, 1-1.

Scarborough’s Jake Gross, who missed all but the final game of the regular season because of injury, opened the scoring 11 minutes into the game, putting in a shot from the front of the crease as he was knocked to the ice.

Cam Bell scored the equalizer with less than a minute left in the period, jamming the puck past goalie Dalton Finley.

Less than 10 minutes into the second period, Falmouth moved into a 3-1 lead.

Tuttle snapped the tie eight minutes into the period when he pounced on a loose puck in the crease after Finley stopped a shot by Andre Clement.

Ben Freeman added to the lead with a short-handed goal. But Gross quickly answered with his second goal, then tied it with a power-play goal early in the third.

“We got down two goals and for them to fight back, a young team like this under adversity to be able to come back and tie the game was big for them,” Scarborough Coach Norm Gagne said.

Bell scored into an empty net with a little more than a minute left.
