LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Maine used a five-run sixth inning to win the opener 6-4, then scored in the eighth to win the second game 3-2 for a sweep of Long Beach State in a softball doubleheader Wednesday.
Kristen Koslosky hit an RBI single, Hilary Kane drew a bases-loaded walk and the Black Bears (4-4) capitalized on two errors in the first-game rally, which came in the sixth inning and put Maine ahead 5-4.
Jennifer Eberhardt added an RBI double in the seventh.
In the second game, Eberhardt singled home pinch-runner Stephanie Wood with two outs in the eighth to beat the 49ers (6-11).
BASEBALL
MAINE 17, FLORIDA A&M 7: Sam Balzano, Fran Whitten and Eric White each had three hits as the Black Bears (3-2) downed the Rattlers (1-8) at Tallahassee, Fla.
Balzano also scored four runs and drove in two, Whitten had three runs and an RBI and White added two runs and an RBI.
Alex Calbick had four RBI and Brain Doran finished with three for Maine.
The Black Bears scored in every inning but the sixth, including four-run rallies in the fourth and seventh.
MEN’S LACROSSE
BATES 7, KEENE STATE 6: Jason Hichborn made it 6-6 with 48 seconds left in regulation, then got the winner in overtime as the Bobcats won an opener at Lewiston.
After Reed Brown won the first faceoff of overtime, Hichborn ended it 52 seconds into the 4-minute period when he sent a shot from the middle past goalie Jack Rogers, who made 16 saves.
Ian Hart and Matt Crimmins also had two goals, Matt Schairer added a goal and two assists and Taylor Jette had two assists for Bates.
Adam Scharff made 11 saves for the Bobcats.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
(6) NORTH CAROLINA 88, MARYLAND 64: Tyler Zeller had 30 points in his final home game to help North Carolina (26-4, 13-2 Atlantic Coast) beat Maryland (16-13, 6-9) at Chapel Hill, N.C.
John Henson added 19 points for the Tar Heels, who led all game to set up a matchup with No. 4 Duke this weekend.
(7) MISSOURI 78, IOWA STATE 72: Michael Dixon scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures for Missouri (26-4, 13-4 Big 12), which beat Iowa State (21-9, 11-6) at Columbia, Mo., and clinched the No. 2 seed in next week’s Big 12 tournament.
CINCINNATI 72, (8) MARQUETTE 61: JaQuon Parker scored a career-high 28 points in a take-it-to-the-hoop offense, leading Cincinnati (21-9, 11-6 Big East) over visiting Marquette (24-6, 13-4).
(10) OHIO STATE 75, NORTHWESTERN 73: Jared Sullinger banked in a turnaround shot with 3.1 seconds left as Ohio State (24-6, 12-5 Big Ten) recovered after squandering a 13-point second-half lead to beat Northwestern (17-12, 7-10) at Evanston, Ill.
SOUTH FLORIDA 58, (19) LOUISVILLE 51: Jawanza Poland scored 16 points and visiting South Florida (19-11, 12-5 Big East) beat Louisville (22-8, 10-7).
(23) TEMPLE 90, MASSACHUSETTS 88: Khalif Wyatt scored 26 points, including the winning layup in the final seconds of overtime, to help Temple (23-6, 12-3 Atlantic 10) beat Massachusetts (19-10, 8-7) at Philadelphia and clinch the top seed in next week’s league tournament.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(8) DELAWARE 79, WILLIAM & MARY 53: Elena Delle Donne had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Delaware (27-1, 18-0 Colonial Athletic) over William & Mary (10-19, 3-15) at Williamsburg, Va.
NOTES
THE MAINE men’s and women’s basketball teams begin play in the America East tournament this week.
The Maine women (7-22, 4-12 in America East) are seeded eighth and will play No. 9 Stony Brook (4-25, 1-15) at 6 tonight. The Black Bears have beaten Stony Brook twice. The winner will play top-seeded Boston University (22-7, 15-1) in the quarterfinals at noon Friday.
The Maine men (12-16, 6-10) are seeded No. 7 and will play No. 2 Vermont (20-11, 13-3) in a quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Catamounts won both meetings with Maine.
