MIDDLETON, Conn. —Junior Logan Russell of Bath finished fifth in the 157-pound bracket as three University of Southern Maine Huskies earned All- New England honors at the 2012 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships hosted this past weekend by Wesleyan University.
Russell joined senior co-captain Billy Cole and sophomore Dan Suarez on the podium for the Huskies, who finished the 14-team tournament in 10th place with 43.5 points.
Host Wesleyan University won the championship with 126 points, narrowly edging Springfield, which finished second with 125.5 points. Johnson & Wales University placed third with 87.5 points.
After dropping a major decision in his second match of the tournament, Russell rumbled his way through the wrestle-back bracket to earn a fifth-place finish in the 157-pound division. It is the first time in his career that Russell has earned All-New England honors for the Huskies. Russell finished the two-day championship tournament with a 4-2 record, including two wins by pinfall.
Cole placed sixth at 133 and Suarez was sixth at 285.
The 2012 NEWA Championship concluded the Huskies 2012 season. Southern Maine established a school record for dual meet wins in 2012 with a record of 13-7.
