BIDDEFORD — Top-ranked Thornton Academy scored six goals in the third period Tuesday night, pulling away to an 8-1 victory against eighth-seeded Gorham in a Western Class A boys’ hockey quarterfinal at the Biddeford Ice Arena.
The Golden Trojans (17-1-1) will meet Marshwood or Cheverus – who play tonight – in the semifinals Saturday at Lewiston.
Brett Levasseur started the rally 3:17 into the third. Thornton then got two goals from Nick Chen, and one each from Tyler LaPointe, Filip Takac and Bryan Dallaire.
C.J. Maksut scored in the first 36 seconds for Thornton, and Brad Turnbaugh tied it for Gorham (12-8) seven minutes left.
Robert Downing got the only goal of the second for Thornton.
BANGOR 4, BRUNSWICK 1: Chris Howat stopped 20 shots and the second-seeded Rams (14-5) got goals from four players against the seventh-seeded Dragons (7-11-1) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Bangor.
Parker Sanderson opened the scoring with his 18th goal midway through the first period.
Zeb Tuell and Jordan Tracy each notched their sixth goal on power plays – Tuell in the second and Tracy in the third.
Watt Frost added an empty-netter after Dwayne Palmer of Brunswick scored with 29 seconds left.
Blake Alexander made 24 saves for the Dragons.
LEWISTON 8, SKOWHEGAN 0: Matt Poulin had a hat trick and Jake Bergeron added two more to lift the top-seeded Blue Devils (14-4-1) over the eighth-seeded Indians (7-10-2) in an Eastern A quarterfinal at Lewiston.
Desmond Gagne added three assists and goalie Ben Wigant needed to make just three saves for Lewiston.
Brett Vallee, Brandon Tiner and Max Bolduc also scored.
Sam Edmondson stopped 41 shots for Skowhegan.
CONY 3, MHW 2: Dallas Clark scored his second goal of the game with 35 seconds left in overtime to lift fourth-seeded Cony (15-4) past fifth-seeded Maranacook-Hall-Dale-Winthrop (9-10) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Kents Hill.
The Rams, who won their first playoff game since 2002, will play defending regional champ and top-seeded Lewiston (14-4-1) in the semifinals Saturday at the Colisee.
“We worked hard and got the win,” Cony senior captain Galen Casey said. “It feels great. We’ve worked hard all season. It just feels good to win this.”
