SURRY — A Deer Isle man is dead tonight after his dirt bike swerved into the path of a car.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, identified the victim as 19-year-old Derrick Robbins. McCausland said Robbins was killed instantly.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Mark Clapp of Surry, sustained minor injuries.

McCausland said Robbins was operating his dirt bike – his headlights were turned off – on the Toddy Pond Road in Surry when he collided with the car driven by Clapp around 7:30 p.m.

The collision took place at the top of a hill. Robbins apparently had driven about 20 miles from his home in Deer Isle when the crash took place.
