PORTLAND ( AP) — A spokeswoman for Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he missed a White House meeting on the final day of the National Governors Association conference to get back to work in his home state.
Spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett says LePage left Washington on Monday ahead of the final event of the NGA winter meeting to get home before the end of the business day.
LePage attended Sunday night’s dinner hosted by President Barack Obama; Monday’s session focused on policy discussion with the president. The president urged governors Monday to boost funding for education, something LePage has done with his budget in Maine.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
