The Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance is seeking commercial fishermen living and working in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties who are willing to discuss their fishing family heritage through pictures, stories, news clippings and other artifacts.
Fishermen are invited to share their stories in a small group setting at the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.
Fishermen who have participated in collaborative research also are invited to describe their research experience.
Fishermen selected to be interviewed by Fishing Heritage Alliance advisers and board members will be compensated at a competitive hourly rate with certified “credit vouchers,” according to Sherman Hoyt, a member of the board of the Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance.
Vouchers can be redeemed at local vendors to purchase safety equipment, vessel maintenance services or other approved non-fishing gear purchases.
The nonprofit Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance was founded in 2009 by fishermen and members of the community to help preserve the fishing way of life in Mid-coast Maine.
Since 2010, the alliance has contracted for public outreach services with 18 fishermen who have received a total of $17,000 to help them maintain their vessels in safe and seaworthy condition.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
