STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Dallis Joyner scored 12 points and Stony Brook defeated Maine 55-48 Sunday for its second America East regular season championship men’s basketball championship in three years.
The Seahawks (20-8, 14-2 America East) led 30-24 at halftime, outscoring Maine 12-2 on second-chance points. They led by as many as 15 points in the first 20 minutes.
Maine (12-16, 6-10) pulled within 51-48 on Kilian Cato’s 3-pointer with 1:05 left. The Seawolves then made 4 of 6 from the line, while Maine went 0 for 3 from the field in the final minute.
Alasdair Fraser had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Justin Edwards chipped in 12 points for the Black Bears.
(16) WISCONSIN 63, (8) OHIO STATE 60: Jared Berggren scored Wisconsin’s final five points — including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left — and the Badgers (21-8, 10-6 Big Ten) beat the Buckeyes (23-6, 11-5) at Columbus, Ohio.
Jordan Taylor had 19 points and Ryan Evans scored 10 for Wisconsin, which made up for an earlier home loss to the Buckeyes.
Deshaun Thomas had 23 points for Ohio State. Leading scorer Jared Sullinger was held to eight points.
MIAMI 78, (15) FLORIDA STATE 62: Durand Scott scored 17 points and the Hurricanes (17-10, 8-6 Atlantic Coast) snapped a six-game losing streak against the rival Seminoles (19-9, 10-4) at Coral Gables, Fla.
(17) LOUISVILLE 57, PITTSBURGH 54: Russ Smith scored 18 points, Kyle Kuric added 17 as the Cardinals (22-7, 10-6 Big East) held off the Panthers (15-14, 4-12) at Louisville, Ky.
(23) INDIANA 69, MINNESOTA 50: Christian Watford, Victor Oladiopo and Jordan Hulls all scored 12 points, and the visiting Hoosiers (22-7, 9-7 Big Ten) dealt the Gophers (17-12, 5-11) their fifth straight loss.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(5) MIAMI 88, BOSTON COLLEGE 42: Riquna Williams scored 20 points, Shenise Johnson added 19 and the Hurricanes (25-4, 14-2 Atlantic Coast) beat the Eagles (7-22, 2-14) for their 40th straight home victory.
(6) MARYLAND 65, NORTH CAROLINA STATE 50: Alyssa Thomas scored 22 of her 24 points in the second half and added a career-high 17 rebounds as the Terrapins (25-4, 12-4 Atlantic Coast) led from start to finish against the Wolfpack (16-14, 5-11) at Raleigh, N.C.
(7) DUKE 69, NORTH CAROLINA 63: Tricia Liston scored 15 points to help the Blue Devils (24-4, 15-1 Atlantic Coast) win the ACC’s regular-season championship and get their first road victory against the Tar Heels (19-10, 9-7) in Joanne P. McCallie’s five years as coach.
(23) NEBRASKA 71, (8) OHIO STATE 57: Emily Cady matched her career high with 24 points as the Cornhuskers (21-7, 10-6 Big Ten) upset the Buckeyes (24-5, 11-5) at Lincoln, Neb.
(9) DELAWARE 89, NORTHEASTERN 71: Elena Delle Donne scored 35 points and the Blue Hens (26-1, 17-0 Colonial Athletic Association) beat the visiting Huskies (7-21 overall, 5-12) to tie the school record for victories in a season.
(10) TENNESSEE 75, FLORIDA 59: Glory Johnson had 21 points and 10 rebounds and the Volunteers (21-8, 12-4 Southeastern Conference) clinched the No. 2 seed for the SEC tournament with a win over the Gators (18-11, 8-8) at Knoxville, Tenn.
(11) PENN STATE 74, MINNESOTA 51: Maggie Lucas scored 24 points and the Nittany Lions (23-5, 13-3 Big Ten) smothered the cold-shooting Gophers (14-16, 6-10) at State College, Pa., to claim sole possession of the Big Ten regular-season title.
(13) KENTUCKY 76, MISSISSIPPI STATE 40: A’Dia Mathies and Bernisha Pinkett each scored 13 points as the visiting Wildcats (24-5, 13-3 Southeastern Conference) clinched their first regular-season SEC title in 30 years.
(17) GEORGIA TECH 62, CLEMSON 50: Sydney Wallace scored 16 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (22-7, 12-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) past the Tigers (6-21, 2-14) at Atlanta.
BASEBALL
CLEMSON 9, MAINE 6: Steve Wilkerson went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and two RBI, and Richie Shaffer was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI to help the Tigers (4-2) overcome a 6-0 deficit against the Black Bears (1-2) at Clemson, S.C.
Scott Heath was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, and Alex Calbick was 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI for Maine.
MEN’S LACROSSE
UNE 14, HUSSON 6: Geoff Bruno had three goals and two assists, and Dan O’Gorham finished with three goals and one assist to lead the Nor’easters past the Eagles in an opener at Bangor.
Nick Gross also scored three goals for UNE, which took an 8-0 halftime lead.
Ben Landry scored three goals for Husson.
