Vonn wins super-G, takes over career lead
Lindsey Vonn captured a World Cup super-G Sunday at Bansko, Bulgaria, to become the career leader in the discipline. By winning her 18th super-G, she overtook Austria’s Renate Goetschl for the record.
Vonn has 10 World Cup victories this season and 51 for her career.
She was timed in 1 minute, 15.66 seconds. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was 0.05 seconds behind and Daniela Merighetti of Italy was third, 0.07 seconds back. Julia Mancuso of the U.S. was eighth.
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Italy’s Massimiliano Blardone mastered a fast-deteriorating course to beat World Cup overall leader Marcel Hirscher in a giant slalom at Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
Blardone trailed Hirscher by 0.02 seconds after the first leg, but raced through soft, rutted snow to finish the two runs in 2 minutes, 33.77 seconds. Hirscher was 0.16 behind, and extended his lead in the overall and giant slalom standings.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
UFC: Lincolnville native Tim Boetsch survived two lopsided rounds before blitzing top-ranked middleweight Yushin Okami in the final round at UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan, on Saturday.
Boetsch landed a head kick that appeared to stun Okami and followed up with several unanswered punches before referee Leon Roberts stepped in 54 seconds into the third round.
Boetsch improved to 15-4 and is 3-0 since moving down from light heavyweight.

NEW ENGLAND GOLDEN GLOVES: Portland Boxing Club novice welterweight Jayson Richter defeated Kevin Weeks of Raynham, Mass., in a 3-2 decision to win the New England Golden Gloves championship at Lowell, Mass.
In other Portland Boxing Club matches: open class light welterweight Casey Kramlich dropped a 3-2 decision to James Perella of Mansfield, Mass.; open class featherweight Liz Leddy fell to Rashida Ellis of Lynn, Mass., in a 3-2 decision; open class featherweight John Lope lost a 5-0 decision to Elijah Peixoto of New Haven, Conn.; and novice lightweight Kathy Ureneck lost to Misty Grey of Amesbury, Mass., in a 3-2 decision.
BOBSLED
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Steven Holcomb of the United States won the gold medal in four-man at Lake Placid, N.Y.
Holcomb and his crew of Justin Olsen, Steve Langton and Curt Tomasevicz had a four-run total of 3 minutes, 36.83 seconds. They beat Germany’s Maximilian Arndt by a half-second.
SOCCER
LEAGUE CUP: Liverpool’s six-year trophy drought ended with a victory over Cardiff in a penalty shootout in the final at Wembley, England, when Anthony Gerrard missed the final kick.
Liverpool is owned by Red Sox owner John Henry, who rescued the soccer team from the brink of bankruptcy on Oct. 15, 2010.

OPEN 13: Juan Martin del Potro beat Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4 in the final at Marseille, France, for his first title of the season.
