AUGUSTA – Top-seeded Dirigo won its fourth consecutive Western Class C boys’ basketball championship Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
Led by Cody St. Germain, named the tournament’s outstanding player, the Cougars raced to a 69-38 win over sixth-seeded Old Orchard Beach to advance to the state final.
Dirigo (20-1) will play Lee Academy for the state championship Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
St. Germain, a 6-foot-4 senior center who received the Harry Edwards Award, scored a game-high 24 points. Josh Turbide followed with 14 points. Ben Holmes added 11.
Quincy Grace led the Seagulls (12-8) with 13 points. Joe Gildard added 12 points.
Dirigo opened up a 28-18 lead when St. Germain scored a fast-break layup with about a minute left in the first half. The Cougars held a 45-28 lead at the end of the third quarter and began the fourth with a 10-0 run to put the game away.
Dirigo, which won Class C state championships in 1982 and 1983, has lost in its three most recent trips to the state final. This year’s final will be a rematch of last year, won by Lee Academy, 65-55.
