PORTLAND – The No. 3 Bonny Eagle boys basketball team gave it their best shot, but they couldn’t get over the hump.
For the second straight year, the Scots lost in the Class A West regional final, falling to Deering 45-42 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The top-seeded Rams advance to the state title game against East champion Hampden Academy on Saturday night at 9 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
The Scots had a chance to pull off the upset, grabbing a late lead, but Deering, who had erased an 11-point third quarter deficit, came through and tied the game and took a 42-39 lead before the Scots hit a 3 to tie it. But just when it looked like Bonny Eagle had the momentum, the Rams’ Pat Green came through in a huge way.
Green hit a 3 at the buzzer to put Deering over the top and leave the Scots pondering what could have been for the second straight season.
