Forward Watkins coming back to Pirates after first NHL appearance with Coyotes
The Phoenix Coyotes sent forward Matt Watkins back to the Portland Pirates, the team’s American Hockey League affiliate.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Watkins made his NHL debut Tuesday night with the Coyotes against the Los Angeles Kings, when he was on the ice for 6 minutes, 37 seconds.
In 48 games with the Pirates, he has nine goals and 18 assists.
ROAD RACING
TD BEACH TO BEACON: Organizers of the 10K race chose the Center for Grieving Children as its beneficiary this year.
The nonprofit center has provided support to bereaved children and families without charge since 1987 and serves 4,000 people each year.
GYMNASTICS
HAMM SENTENCED: Paul Hamm, an Olympic champion gymnast, pleaded no contest on a reduced set of charges and was sentenced to probation in Ohio, where he was accused of kicking a cab driver while drunk, damaging a taxi window and not paying a $23 fare.
Hamm, 29, entered the pleas on two misdemeanor charges in an Upper Arlington court in suburban Columbus. Those charges were related to criminal damaging and a failure to pay. A misdemeanor assault charge was dismissed.

RECORD SET: Yelena Isinbayeva, a two-time Olympic champion, broke her indoor pole vault world record at the XL Galan meet at Stockholm.
Isinbayeva cleared 16 feet, 53/4 inches on her second attempt, topping her mark of 16-43/4 set in 2009 at Donetsk, Ukraine.
SOCCER
U.S. ROSTER: Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey are on the U.S. national team for Wednesday’s friendly at Italy and could play together for the first time since Jurgen Klinsmann was hired as coach last summer.
Borussia Dortmund forward Terrence Boyd was the only newcomer on the squad.
EUROPA LEAGUE: Manchester United advanced to the next round despite losing 2-1 to Ajax of Amsterdam at home.
TENNIS
DUBAI CHAMPIONSHIPS: Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki reached the semifinals and the U.S. Open champion, Sam Stosur, lost to Jelena Jankovic.
Wozniacki ousted Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 7-5 in a meeting of former No. 1s after Jankovic stopped Stosur, 6-4, 6-2.
OPEN 13: Mardy Fish was knocked out by a French qualifier, Albano Olivetti, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round at Marseille, France.
HALL OF FAME: Manuel Orantes was elected in the master player category.
