BRUNSWICK — Peace-Works will present a program titled “Mexico’s Tarahumara — Running Out of Time” at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Morrell Meeting Room at Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St.

“High on the plateaus and deep in the canyons of Mexico’s Sierra Madre Occidental live a group of indigenous people as unassimilated as any in the Americas,” a PeaceWorks release states. “The Tarahumara or, more accurately, the Raramuri, renowned for their long-distance running ability, have survived for at least 2,000 years, but their way of life is now threatened by illegal logging, (narcotics) traffic and climate change.”

Richard Hendrick will lead Sunday’s program, based on information he gathered during a project he launched eight years ago to record the final words of the community’s shaman, Don Agustin Ramos.

Richard and Dud Hendrick will speak and show photographs and video material about this project.

This gathering is co-sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, Maine; Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom; Maine Veterans for Peace; Vital Connections; and Merrymeeting Greens.
