ST. LOUIS – Brad Marchand scored twice and Tim Thomas stopped 30 shots to lead the Boston Bruins to a 4-2 win over St. Louis on Wednesday, ending the Blues’ team-record point streak at 21 home games.
Chris Stewart and Ryan Reaves scored for the Blues on the first five shots of the game, but Thomas stopped the next 27 shots to give the Blues their first regulation loss to an Eastern Conference team in 15 games this season.
St. Louis, 26-4-4 at home, last lost at home in regulation on a 5-2 decision to Chicago on Dec. 3, 2011.
Marchand and Milan Lucic scored in the first period to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Marchand pushed the lead to 4-2 midway through the third with his 21st goal of the season.
Chris Kelly, who assisted on Lucic’s goal, broke a 13-game scoreless drought with his 15th goal of the season, tying a career high and putting the Bruins up 3-2 with 40 seconds remaining in the first period.
Thomas and the Blues’ Brian Elliott gave up a combined five goals on 16 shots in the first period.
Elliott, who entered the game with a league-leading 1.56 goals-against average, fell to 20-7-2 and lost for the second game in a row after a five-game winning streak.
NOTES: Referee Ian Walsh left early in the second period after suffering a cut that required medical attention. He returned 5:13 later. Elliott made his fourth successive start, tying a season high. The Bruins were making their first to St. Louis since Nov. 23, 2009. Boston has a league-best plus-33 scoring advantage in the third period.
AVALANCHE 4, KINGS 1: Paul Stastny scored two goals, Semyon Varlamov stopped 32 shots and Colorado beat visiting Los Angeles for its first season sweep of the Kings in nearly two decades.
Mark Olver and Jay McClement also added goals for the Avalanche, who have won three straight at home and moved within two points of Los Angeles for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Colorado went 4-0 against Los Angeles this season, the first time the team has swept the series since 1992-93, when the franchise was in Quebec.
SENATORS 5, CAPITALS 2: Erik Karlsson and Milan Michalek each had three points as Ottawa beat visiting Washington.
John Carlson and Mathieu Perreault scored for the Capitals, who have lost three straight. Alex Ovechkin missed the game with a lower body injury and is listed as day-to-day.
Karlsson finished with a goal and two assists to set a franchise record for assists by a defenseman in a season with 47.
The 21-year-old now has seven points in his last two games. His 60 points on the season give him a 20-point lead on Florida’s Brian Campbell for the NHL lead in scoring by a defenseman.
Michalek added two goals and an assist, while Chris Phillips, with his fourth goal in six games, also scored for Ottawa. Craig Anderson made 33 saves.
Nick Foligno scored into an empty net for Ottawa.
NOTES
The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to a four-year, $19 million contract extension with forward Tuomo Ruutu that will pay him $4 million next season and $5 million in each of the next three years. The Columbus Blue Jackets activated goaltender Curtis Sanford, who had been on injured reserve following a lower body injury suffered earlier this month.
