BAILEYVILLE (AP) — The parents of 3-year-old eastern Maine girl who walked a mile in the middle of the night through freshly fallen snow say God was protecting their daughter.
Police say Hope Trott woke up last week and, apparently thinking her mother was at a store buying pizza, put on shoes, threw a jacket on over her nightdress and walked to the store.
An employee who arrived at 4 a.m. found her crying outside and called police.
Police tell the Bangor Daily News officers followed her footprints back to her Baileyville home, found the front door open, and thinking a home invasion was in progress, went inside with guns drawn. They found Hope’s parents and two siblings asleep.
Hope was unhurt.
Her parents have since installed a chain and deadbolt on their door.
