BIDDEFORD — Beth Suggs had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the top-seeded University of New England women’s basketball team to a 63-55 win over eighth-seeded Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal Tuesday night.
Liz LeBlanc added 12 points for the Nor’easters (22-4), who took an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes and led the rest of the way.
The Bison (6-20) used a 10-2 run to pull within 21-19 later in the first, but UNE scored the next seven points and finished the half with a 32-24 lead.
Nichols got as close as four in the second half.
ST. JOSEPH’S 89, ALBERTUS MAGNUS 51: Ashley Geel had 22 points and seven reboundsm and Megan McDevitt had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the second-seeded Monks (18-7) past the seventh-seeded Falcons (14-11) in a GNAC quarterfinal at Standish.
Lindsay Moore chipped in 12 points and eight boards, and Danyelle Shufelt had 11 points off the bench for St. Joseph’s.
McDevitt and Geel combined for 24 points in the first half as the Monks took a 40-17 lead.
(1) BAYLOR 80, TEXAS 59: Brittney Griner had 18 points with 10 rebounds, and the Bears (28-0, 15-0) claimed the outright Big 12 title by beating the Longhorns (15-12, 5-10) at Waco, Texas.
(4) CONNECTICUT 86, PITTSBURGH 37: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 23 points to lead the Huskies (25-3, 12-2 Big East) to a win over the Panthers (8-19, 0-14) at Pittsburgh.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ST. JOSEPH’S 79, MT. IDA 43: Zach Blodgett scored 12 points off the bench, and Zach O’Brien had 11 points and 10 assists to help the second-seeded Monks (18-8) beat the seventh-seeded Mustangs (9-17) in a GNAC quarterfinal at Standish.
Nich Jobin also scored 11 points for the Monks, who led 36-20 at halftime and got points from 14 players.
(1) KENTUCKY 73, MISSISSIPPI ST. 64: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 18 points, Anthony Davis added 13 points and 11 rebounds, and the Wildcats (27-1, 13-0 SEC) rallied to beat the Bulldogs (19-9, 6-7) at Starkville, Miss.
The Wildcats trailed 41-28 at halftime but slowly climbed back to take their first lead at 63-62 with 4:11 remaining on a layup by Kidd-Gilchrist. They never trailed again, winning their 19th straight game.
Kidd-Gilchrist scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half.
Dee Bost led Mississippi State with 21 points, while Arnett Moultrie added 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs have lost four straight games.
It was a tense game throughout with three technical fouls.
KANSAS STATE 78, (3) MISSOURI 68: Rodney McGruder scored 24 points as the Wildcats (19-8, 8-7 Big 12) upset the Tigers (25-3, 12-3) at Columbia, Mo.
(7) NORTH CAROLINA 86, N.C. STATE 74: Kendall Marshall had a career-high 22 points and 13 assists to help the Tar Heels (24-4, 11-2 ACC) thump the Wolfpack (18-10, 7-6) at Raleigh, N.C.
(8) OHIO ST. 83, ILLINOIS 67: Deshaun Thomas scored 19 points as the Buckeyes (23-5, 11-4) regained their shooting touch, rolling over the Illini (16-12, 5-10) at Columbus, Ohio.
SETON HALL 73, (9) GEORGETOWN 55: Jordan Theodore scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Pirates (19-9, 8-8 Big East) over the Hoyas (20-6, 10-5) at Newark, N.J.
(11) MICHIGAN 67, NORTHWESTERN 55: Trey Burke, Zack Novak and Stu Douglass hit 3-pointers to start overtime as the Wolverines (21-7, 11-4 Big Ten) beat the Wildcats (16-11, 6-9) at Evanston, Ill.
(12) FLORIDA 63, AUBURN 47: Kenny Boynton scored 20 points as the Gators (22-6, 10-3 SEC) overcame 18 turnovers to beat the Tigers (14-13, 4-9) at Gainesville, Fla.
BASEBALL
BATES, BERRY SPLIT: Steve Burke singled home Nate Pajka with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning, and the Bobcats turned a double play to get out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning for a 5-4 victory and a split in a season-opening doubleheader in Mount Berry, Ga.
The Vikings (5-4) won the first game, 8-0.
