AUGUSTA — The game plan, Seacoast Christian girls basketball coach Charlie Johnson says, is rather simple.

“We’ll have to stop Jamie,” he said. “That’s the key.”

“Jamie” is 6-foot Richmond center Jamie Plummer, who poses a tough matchup for most Class D opponents.

Top-seeded Richmond (17-1) will meet No. 4 Seacoast (16-3) in a Western D semifinal at 11:30 a.m. today at the Augusta Civic Center.

No. 2 Rangeley (17-2) will play No. 6 Vinalhaven (11-8) in the other semifinal, at 10 a.m.

Richmond defeated Seacoast Christian twice during the regular season, outscoring the Guardians 85-49.

“There’s a little apprehension,” Richmond coach Molly Bishop said. “They are a scrappy group of players. They play hard.”

Plummer had double-doubles in each game.

“Hopefully, she can get into foul trouble,” Johnson said.

Seacoast had its way with Forest Hills in the quarterfinals, with 5-foot-9 center Ruth Towne enjoying a sizable height advantage. She scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in what Johnson hailed as her best game of the season.

However, Plummer and Richmond present a much tougher matchup.

“Our size is a little bit more of a challenge than what they had in Forest Hills,” Bishop said.

Johnson said the Guardians will play zone defense to try to contain the versatile Plummer.

“We’ll stay with the zone,” he said, “and I might press, too. We had some success with that against them up at their place. We only trailed by six at the end of the third quarter but then Plummer hit a half-court shot at the buzzer that took the wind out of us.”

Added Bishop: “It’s what we expect them to do. We just need to do a better job communicating. We are so much better when we do that.”

Rangeley, meanwhile, twice beat Vinalhaven by seven points in the regular season.

The Lakers hope center Jenney Abbott — who is recovering from a knee injury — will return today.

Abbott missed the quarterfinal victory over Greater Portland Christian.

“Jenney Abbott will hopefully be playing on Thursday,” Rangeley coach Heidi Deery said. “She’s a great rebounder for us. We’ll be looking for her to help us out inside as well.”

The Vikings, who upset No. 3 Greenville in the quarterfinals, employ a 2-3 zone.

“We’re going to have to move the ball and attack that zone,” Deery said. “That’s what they like to play, and we’re fine with that. Defensively, we’re going to have to play the intense defense like we’re capable of playing, and take care of rebounds.”

Taylor Esty, who averaged 14 points a game during the regular season, leads the Lakers offensively. She finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds in a 65-43 quarterfinal victory over Greater Portland Christian. Chantal Carrier added 20 points for Rangeley.
