FRYEBURG – Camden Hills rode its overwhelming depth to its second Class B wrestling championship in three years Saturday.
Four of their wrestlers captured individual titles as the Windjammers finished 60 points ahead of Fryeburg Academy, their closest pursuer, at the Ada Cram Wadsworth Arena.
The team scores were Camden Hills 169, Fryeburg Academy 109, Mountain Valley 94.5, York 73, Morse 69, Ellsworth 67, Wells 65, Gardiner 58, Belfast 55, Caribou 44, Medomak Valley 35, Maine Central Institute 32, Mount Desert Island 24.5, Hermon 18, Lincoln Academy 3 and Central 2.
Camden Hills actually had the title nailed down going into the championship round, holding a 55-point lead over Fryeburg Academy.
Only four Fryeburg wrestlers advanced to the championship round, making it mathematically impossible for them to catch the Windjammers.
The Windjammers did get off to a bumpy start. Three of their wrestlers who were seeded first in their brackets lost in the opening round.
“The beginning of the day, we had some really tough matches,” Camden Hills Coach Levi Rollins said. “We fell a little short. As usual the upper-end guys picked up the slack and wrestled just as hard as they could.”
The Windjammers brought 13 wrestlers to the state meet, and eight of them advanced into the championship final.
“We all push each other along and give each other support,” Anthony Batty of Camden Hills said. “If someone goes down, the next person steps up, and it’s been like that all season.”
James Archer at 106, Battey at 182, Brandon Graffam at 195 and Rhett Chase at 220 won individual titles for the Windjammers. Chase finished the season with a 43-0 record.
Rollins said the victory wasn’t as easy as it appeared.
“Our biggest competition in this tournament is that this team was very, very sick and had been all week,” he said.
“We had the flu and and colds, and two or three kids had strep throats, and we also battled some injuries.”
Danny DelGallo of Gardiner was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler. He pinned all three opponents at 138 pounds to capture his second consecutive Class B state title and finish the season with a 46-0 record.
The Sheehan brothers each won individual titles for Fryeburg.
Conor Sheehan, a junior who moved up in weight class this season, won at 113 pounds to capture his second consecutive state title, and Zach Sheehan, a freshman, won at 120.
Brent Waterman of Belfast won his second consecutive title after moving up to the 132-pound division from 125.
