WESTBROOK – Acorn Productions’ annual Phyzgig festival, produced in late December and billed as a family-friendly, mid-winter pick-me-up, was so successful in 2011 that organizers are bringing some performers back for a smaller encore during February school vacation week.

The show will be at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center at the Westbrook Middle School on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. The show will be patterned after the winter Phyzgig festival, held at multiple venues in the greater Portland area during the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Last year’s festival marked its 14th appearance, featuring an eclectic collection of acts inspired by classic vaudeville performances. With about a dozen different performers in all, the festival covered everything from music to dance to illusion to juggling, and everything in between.

The performances typically draw about 2,500 people. Next week, Acorn Productions will put on a scaled-down version of the festival, called Phyzgig Westbrook. The event, scheduled to coincide with February’s winter school vacation, includes a performance by AudioBody, a two-man performance team that fuses music, comedy and exotic, futuristic instruments.

The event also features Randy Judkins, a motivational speaker and performer. Judkins, who blends physical comedy and performances with presentations and messages of teamwork and self-image, taught a series of master classes on character and physical theater for the drama division at the Julliard School in New York City.

Norman Ng will also be performing. According to a release from Acorn, Ng has been a stage illusionist for the past 17 years, with an eye-catching style, and illusionist Dan Link will also be performing “close-up” magic tricks in the lobby outside the event.

“Although the festival continues to showcase the work of performers from around the country, the focus continues to be on Maine artists who trained with the famed master of mime Tony Montanaro at the Celebration Barn Theatre in South Paris, Maine,” the Acorn release said.

The show is sponsored by Idexx Laboratories.
