SOUTH BERWICK — The two sophomore Bradys, Brady Innes and Brady Dodge, were clutch in the fourth quarter to spark No. 6 Marshwood to a 58-53 win over No. 11 Sanford in the preliminary round of the Western Maine Class A boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday night.

Marshwood (14-5) advanced to a 7:30 p.m. Saturday quarterfinal against No. 3 Bonny Eagle at the Portland Expo.

Bonny Eagle (15-3) beat Marshwood by a point on the road during the regular season.

Innes, a 6-foot-5 center, led all scorers with 20 points while adding eight rebounds. He scored two baskets, both inside, in the final minute. The first gave the Hawks the lead for good at 51-50 with a minute to go. The second, with 17 seconds left, gave his team the cushion it needed.

Dodge, the point guard, went 4 for 4 from the line, also in the final minute.

“I like to feed off Matt (Crosby) and Jack (Verrill),” said Innes. “I was getting a lot of touches and just trying to do my part.”

Crosby, the team’s top scorer, added 12 points and Verrill had 10.

With Sanford (10-9) focusing on the Hawks’ top two scorers, Innes had more room to operate inside and he took full advantage.

“Brady has been getting better as the season has gone along,” said Coach Mike Zamarchi.

“He’s gotten stronger. His baskets at the end were huge. Whenever we needed a big basket, he seemed to get it. Sanford made us work. They would make a big play and we would follow with one. It was like that for most of the game. I was pretty nervous about this one. Our two regular-season games with them were close. I’m just glad we’re getting a chance to go to Portland for the next round.”

Leading by three points entering the fourth quarter, Marshwood outscored the Redskins 15-13 over the final eight minutes.

After taking a 51-50 on Jimmie Chaisson’s 3-pointer with 1:19 remaining, Sanford turned the ball over three times the rest of the way. Its inexperience in the tournament might have been a contributing factor.

“It was an intense game,” said Sanford Coach Kyle Hodsdon.

“These kids were playing in their first tournament game. They gave me everything they had.”

After Chaisson’s basket. Crosby was called for an offensive foul, negating his basket in the lane.

Moments later, Innes scored to make it 52-51. The Redskins then threw the ball away. Dodge hit the first of two straight from the line with 37 seconds left to make it 54-51.

Sanford turned the ball over with 29 seconds left and then Innes scored again with 17 seconds remaining to make it a five-point game.

Evyn Nolette, a sophomore guard, made two from the line for the Redskins before Dodge made two more with 7.3 seconds left.

Innes scored 16 points in the second half. Dodge scored all of his six points in the fourth quarter.

Chaisson, who has been bothered by a knee problem, led Sanford with 14 points. Nolette added 11 and Ryan Camire, Sanford’s leading scorer, had 10.

Sanford took a brief lead at the start of the second half. Trailing 30-21 at the half, the Redskins opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 32-30 lead. Camire started the run with a 3-pointer. He added another basket and Jon Schroder had two baskets.

Marshwood regrouped as Crosby and Innes started to find the range and give their team a 43-40 lead after three quarters.
