BATH — Hyde School hosted the 2012 Class A League Wrestling Championships on Saturday.
This tournament brought together the 13 schools of the New England Class A League to qualify the top-four place winning wrestlers in each weight class for the Prep School New Englands on Feb. 18-19.
Fourteen nationally ranked wrestlers competed in the tournament, including Hyde- Bath 170- pounder Bemnet Banks, who entered the tournament ranked seventh.
Hyde finished tied for ninth place with Tilton School of N.H. with 54.5 points. Northfield– Mount Hermon School won the tournament and was followed by Phillips Academy.
In the individual weight classes, Austin Wang ( 113) rebounded from a pair of heartbreaking losses in matches he was winning to earn a sixth. Lukas Fischer (182) wrestled well, but fell 7-5 in the fifth-place bout.
Andrew Martz ( 138) finished the day 3-2, but was just shy of placing.
In the championship finals Banks squared off against his Northfield– Mount Hermon foe. This battle of No. 2 vs. No. 1 in New England and No. 7 vs. No. 6 in the nation did not disappoint as Banks secured a 4-3 victory.
