KENNEBUNK — He’s a product of one of the most storied high school lacrosse programs in Maine.

Now Dan Seavey will get a chance to run it himself.

Seavey, who learned the sport at Kennebunk under legendary coach Charlie Burch, has been named the school’s new boys lacrosse varsity head coach, Thor Nilsen, the school’s athletic director, recently announced.

Seavey takes over for Vinny LoBello, who stepped down after two seasons ”“ and two playoff appearances ”“ due to health issues.

LoBello, who succeeded Burch in 2010, brought Seavey back to Kennebunk as an assistant last season after Seavey wrapped up his bachelor’s degree in exercise science at UMaine.

Seavey said he’s thrilled to be able to come full circle.

“It’s great to be able to come back to my alma mater,” said Seavey, “and take over the head job. I want to build the program back up. It’s very exciting.”

Nilsen, who interviewed four candidates before settling on Seavey, was pleased to have hired the former Ram.

“He is knowledgeable, focused and highly organized,” said Nilsen. “He has worked as an assistant coach for Kennebunk lacrosse, knows the athletes and is ready to take the lead role.  He possesses the leadership skills and communication skills necessary for working with our youth program and ultimately moving the high school team forward.  We are excited to have him as a member of our coaching staff.”

Seavey played varsity lacrosse for four seasons before graduating in 2004.

He considers himself to be a disciple of Burch’s, who planted lacrosse programs at both Cape Elizabeth and Kennebunk, before leaving to become an assistant at UNE.

“He’s a great coach,” said Seavey. “One of the best mentors I’ve had. He taught me basically everything I know about lacrosse. I want to be able to bring that program back to where he had it. And maybe even surpass that.

“I learned a lot under Vinny, and under Charlie.”

One thing Seavey said he’ll stress is the importance of playing fundamentally sound lacrosse.

“We’ll be a very well-conditioned team,” he said, “and we’ll execute the basics the best we can. Great lacrosse teams aren’t based on flashiness. It’s working the basics. That’s what we plan.”

Seavey, who ran the Rams’ defense last year, is in the process of hiring an assistant coach.

He said that Tim Spang will return as a volunteer assistant, and that Rev. Paul Gant will continue to serve as head coach of the junior varsity team.

“We’re very excited to get this going,” said Seavey. “We have a lot of talented players. We’re excited to bring new things to the table, and show them what we have.”
