STANDISH – Cole Libby shook off a touch of the flu to score 15 points in the fourth quarter Friday night, helping Bonny Eagle to a hard-fought 52-43 win over Scarborough in SMAA boys’ basketball.
Libby and Dustin Cole combined for all the Scots’ points in the fourth. Cole had eight, all from the line.
Bonny Eagle (13-3), the fourth-ranked team in Western Class A, trailed 18-8 in the second quarter but rallied to trail by only two at halftime. The Scots overcame 33 percent shooting and 22 turnovers.
“It was an ugly game but a win is a win,” said Bonny Eagle Coach Phil Bourassa. “We’re not playing well so we’ll take it. Scarborough is a scrappy team. We made some foul shots at the end and we have players who can handle the ball.”
Up by one after three quarters, Bonny Eagle outscored Scarborough 23-15 in the fourth.
“We couldn’t get our shots to drop in the fourth quarter,” said Scarborough Coach Joe Johnson. “That was the difference in the game. It was a back-and-forth game in the fourth quarter. We played with the fourth-ranked team and had a chance at the end. We’ll build on this. We want to finish strongly in our last two games and get a home preliminary game in the tournament.”
Libby said he’s been under the weather for a couple of weeks.
“It’s been going around,” said Bourassa. “We dug deep and got the win.”
Libby finished with a game- high 20 points. Cole added 17.
Libby needed some rest after school Friday.
“I went home and took a two-hour nap,” he said. “I watched the (junior varsity) game before our game. I was a little tired in the first half but I started to feel better in the second half.”
Libby scored his team’s first seven points of the fourth, including a 3-pointer that countered a 3-pointer by Brendan Hall of the Red Storm (9-7).
David Conceison of Scarborough hit a 3-pointer to make it 38-38 with 3:33 left, but Libby made two from the line to give the Scots the lead for good.
The Red Storm got within a point twice more, but missed three 3-pointers and had to foul.
The player they fouled was Cole, who controlled the ball. In the prettiest play of the game, Cole passed from just over midcourt to Libby in full stride at the opposite side for a layup that gave the Scots a three-point lead prior to Scarborough cutting it to one for the last time.
Cole went 8 of 10 from the line in the fourth quarter.
After a ragged first half, Bonny Eagle found its offense.
Asked what turned the game around in the fourth quarter, Libby said: “We realized we were the better team.”
Dylan Russo led Scarborough with 10 points.
Scarborough got its early lead with 3-point shooting. The Red Storm closed the first quarter with three straight 3s from Hall, Kevin Manning and Russo.
Nick Wayne’s 3-pointer seemed to spark the Scots midway in the second quarter. After Russo hit his second 3-pointer of the first half to make it 18-8, Bonny Eagle went on an 8-0 run to close the second quarter.
