YARMOUTH – Morgan Cahill found a way to make a memorable game unforgettable Thursday night.

Cahill, a senior center, celebrated senior night and passed 1,000 career points with a game-high 25 points, leading Yarmouth to a 49-34 victory over Poland in a Western Maine Conference schoolgirl basketball game.

“It was really exciting to be here with the two other seniors (Jeanna Lowery and Madeline Wood),” said Cahill, the first player to pass 1,000 points as a member of the Clippers. “It was really important that we were all here. We all did it together and that was the most important thing for me, teammates helping me get (1,000 points).”

Cahill, who played for Cheverus last year, returned to finish her high school career alongside her sister (Sean) and in her hometown.

She scored the first nine points to stake the Clippers (7-9) to a 9-1 lead. Her 1,000th point came with 3:40 left in the first half and put Yarmouth ahead 17-11. After being held scoreless in the third quarter, she had 10 straight points early in the fourth, stopping a rally that saw Poland (5-11) make it 30-30 with just under six minutes left.

“We knew it was going to be a big night for Morgan and we were going to make it her night,” said Yarmouth Coach Jay Lowery. “The kids looked for her. They have to make the pass but if they make good passes and make things happen, she can take it over.”

The Knights, who played without starters Melora Lavoie and Kat Seeley because of injury, trailed by eight in the first quarter. Then Brittina Maheux hit the first of her four 3-pointers to leave Poland down 9-4 after one.

Emily Bolduc hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining in the half to bring Poland within 19-16 at halftime.

Sean Cahill then scored six points to kick-start a 10-2 run that put Yarmouth ahead 29-18 with 21/2 minutes left in the third. The quarter ended with Yarmouth leading 30-23.

But Poland scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter.

Maheux drained a 3-pointer, and Bolduc followed with back-to-back baskets to make it 30-30.

“We made a great run by finally running our offense a little better,” said Poland Coach Darren Littlefield. “We set the high screen and came off that screen and got penetration, which is what we do well.

Maheux led the Knights with 12 points.
