Wrestling teams from Marshwood and Noble tuned up for the Western Class A meet in different places Saturday.

While Marshwood was running away with the championship at the Southern Maine Classic in Waterboro, an undermanned Noble was finishing a strong third in the Capital City Classic in Concord, N.H.

Noble, the three-time defending Class A champion, will host the regional meet Feb. 11. The coaches from both teams are preparing for it.

“We wrestled really well and hopefully we can carry it on,” Marshwood Coach Matt Rix said.

The Hawks, who finished 53 points ahead of host Massabesic, sent 11 wrestlers into the championship round of the 15-team event, and eight of them won championships.

Individual winners for the South Berwick school included Elliot Allen at 106, Tyler Davidson at 120, Jackson Howarth at 132, Nicholas Janes at 138, Cody Hughes at 145, Lucas Howarth at 152, Jake Barisano at 195 and Nick Ricker at 285.

Noble, meanwhile, finished 32 points behind first-place Bishop Hendricken of Warwick, R.I., at the Capital City Classic.

The North Berwick school competed without its starting wrestlers in the 120, 126, 152, 195 and 285-pound divisions.

“We had that skin infection go through the team and we decided to keep them off the mat to be safe,” Noble Coach Kip DeVoll said.

“It would be easier to judge if all of them wrestled, but with what we had there we’re starting to come on.”

Jake Bagley, a two-time state champion, was the only wrestler from Noble to claim an individual title at the New Hampshire meet. He pinned all three of his opponents in the 132-pound division.
