PBC’s Richter advances in regional Golden Gloves

Jayson Richter, a novice welterweight from the Portland Boxing Club, advanced to the finals of the Northern New England Golden Gloves at Burlington, Vt., by defeating Burlington’s John Haley in a semifinal bout Saturday.

Richter, a former Marine who is now a premed student at the University of Southern Maine, earned a unanimous decision over Anthony Collins of Lewiston in the first round on Jan. 21.

Richter joins four other PBC fighters — open class middleweight Jeremy Whitham, open class light welterweight Casey Kramlich, open class featherweight Juan Lopez, and open class women’s featherweight Liz Leddy in the finals on Saturday. The winners advance to the New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Lowell, Mass., starting Feb. 10.

U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jeremy Abbott won his third national title, landing the only clean quadruple jump of the day on his way to victory at San Jose, Calif.

Abbott finished with a total score of 273.58, 32-plus points ahead of Adam Rippon.

Caydee Denney and John Coughlin won their first pairs title together after winning the previous two years with other partners.

On Saturday night, Ashley Wagner earned her first women’s title, taking advantage of mistakes by other top contenders.

SOCCER

OLYMPIC QUALIFYING: Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan scored two goals apiece, and the U.S. women beat Canada 4-0 in the championship game of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament at Vancouver, British Columbia.

Wambach scored in the 24th and 28th minutes to push her total to 131 international goals, one ahead of longtime U.S. captain Kristine Lilly for second place on the career list. The 31-year-old forward trails only Mia Hamm at 158.

The game was for bragging rights among neighboring rivals. Both teams wrapped up berths in the London Olympics by winning their semifinals Friday.

FA CUP: Arsenal scored three times in eight second-half minutes to recover from a 2-0 deficit and reach the fifth round with a 3-2 win over visiting Aston Villa.

Villa led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Richard Dunne and Darren Bent. But a revitalized Arsenal side got back into the game through Robin van Persie’s 54th-minute penalty kick, equalized on Theo Walcott’s lucky rebound and took the lead in the 61st minute on a second spot kick from Van Persie.

PORTUGUESE LEAGUE: Defending champion FC Porto’s marathon unbeaten streak ended with a 3-1 loss to Gil Vicente as the club fell one match shy of matching Benfica’s 34-year-old record of 56 consecutive league games without a defeat.

American defender Oguchi Onyewu scored on headers in the 18th and 27th minutes, giving Sporting Lisbon a 2-0 win over Beira Mar.

SKIING

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Lindsey Vonn was denied a three-win weekend sweep by just 0.03 seconds, as Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany won a super-combined event at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Hoefl-Riesch, the reigning overall World Cup champion, won for the first time in 11 months. She trailed Vonn by 0.23 after the super-G but edged Vonn on a flat slalom course slowed by warm sunshine.

Vonn extended her lead in the overall standings to 387 points over Tina Maze of Slovenia, who placed fifth.

HOCKEY

AHL: Ben Bishop of the Peoria Rivermen earned the top goaltender award by stopping 16 of 19 shots for the Western Conference in the AHL All-Star game skills competition in Atlantic City, N.J.

Bishop, a former UMaine goalie, denied all six shooters in the breakaway relay.

Andy Miele, the Portland Pirates’ lone All-Star, scored on 2 of 3 attempts to help the East squad win the rapid fire event.
