Stanley takes 5-shot lead into final round of tourney
Kyle Stanley overpowered Torrey Pines and opened a five-shot lead Saturday in the Farmers Insurance Open at San Diego.
Stanley missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have set the 54-hole tournament record. He settled for a 4-under 68, a spot in the record book with Tiger Woods, and great position as he goes after his first PGA Tour win today.
He was at 18-under 198, matching the record set by Woods in 1998.
John Huh, a PGA Tour rookie out of Q-school, also had a 68 and was at 13-under 203, along with John Rollins.
ABU DHABI CHAMPIONSHIP: Tiger Woods shot a 6-under 66 for a share of the lead with Robert Rock going into the final round.
Woods has a 55-8 record worldwide when he has at least a share of the lead going into the final round, and a win would be the first time since August 2009 that he has won consecutive starts.
PREP SCHOOLS
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Kristin Sanborn scored 16 points to lead Berwick Academy to a 56-41 win over Bancroft School at Worcester, Mass.
Sanborn scored 11 in the first half as the Bulldogs took a 30-18 lead. Rebecca Siegel and Juliana Blais each added nine points for Berwick, which improved to 7-7 and 7-3 in the Eastern Independent League.
Bancroft fell to 5-5, 4-5.
FIGURE SKATING
U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Meryl Davis and Charlie White continued to show the ice dance world how it’s done, winning their fourth straight title, at San Jose, Calif.
Davis and White, the first Americans to win a world title in dance, finished with a whopping 191.54 points, beating siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani by nearly 13 points.
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Italian star Carolina Kostner had a flawless free skate to win her fourth women’s title in the European figure skating championships, at Sheffield, England.
Finland’s Kiira Korpi, second after the short program, was second with 166.94 points. Georgia’s Elene Gedevanishvili took the bronze.
SOCCER
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Liverpool reached the fifth round of the FA Cup at the expense of its fiercest rival, a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Manchester United leaving the famous competition without the English Premier League’s top two teams.
While Chelsea progressed with a 1-0 win at Queens Park Rangers thanks to Juan Mata’s second-half penalty, Netherlands forward Dirk Kuyt scored the winner for Liverpool in the 88th minute at Anfield.
Second-tier Brighton beat Premier League Newcastle 1-0 in another Cup match.
Bolton beat Swansea 2-1 and Norwich won by the same score in the other all-Premier League matchups, while Stoke also progressed with a 2-0 win at Derby.
SPEED SKATING
1,000 METERS: Canadian speed skater Christine Nesbitt broke the world record in the 1,000 meters in the world sprint championship at Calgary, Alberta.
Nesbitt finished in 1 minute, 12.68 seconds to break the mark of 1:13.11 set by Canadian Cindy Klassen in 2006 on the same ice.
SKIING
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Didier Cuche won his second consecutive downhill race on a shortened course at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Erik Guay of Canada finished second and Hannes Reichelt of Austria was third.
Bode Miller of the United States was penalized for showing up a few minutes late for Friday’s draw and had to start 46th rather than 16th. Miller did well early on the course and was close to Cuche but lost speed at the bottom and finished outside the top 30.
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Lindsey Vonn dominated yet another downhill, winning by 1.42 seconds at St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany was runner-up. Tina Weirather of Liechenstein was third.
