LISBON — Police expect to charge a 20-year-old Leeds man who allegedly tried to flee from a head-on crash on Route 9 Thursday as early as today for operating under the influence and other counts.
The crash, reported at 4:22 p.m. Thursday, occurred on Route 9 on the Lisbon side of the town line with Sabattus, according to Police Chief David Brooks.
Nicholas J. Parent, 20, of Mountain View Road, Leeds, reportedly was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier northbound on Route 9 when he swerved to the
left side of the road and hit a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker head on.
A Durham Rescue crew took the driver of the Tracker, Tracy A. Ames, 44, of Sutherland Pond Road, Sabattus. Durham Rescue to St. Mary’s Hospital in
Lewiston. Brooks said she was treated and released.
Both vehicles were totaled.
Following the crash, Parent apparently attempted to flee the scene on foot, Brooks said. However, witnesses to the crash chased Parent, apprehended
him and escorted Parent back to the crash scene to wait until police arrived.
As of late this morning, Brooks said Parent will be charged with operating under the influence, driving to endanger, violation of bail conditions, and
on a felony Androscoggin County warrant for domestic assault.
Brooks transported Parent to the police department for booking. On that trip, Parent began acting strangely, according to Brooks, so the chief called
an ambulance crew to evaluate Parent.
The ambulance took Parent to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he reportedly underwent emergency surgery for internal injuries. A CMMC
representative told police that Parent is in stable condition, according to Brooks.
Brooks said numerous witnesses informed police that they saw Parent driving erratically on Route 9 minutes before the collision.
“Apparently he had passed vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed, and these people stopped at the accident,” Brooks said, adding that the
witnesses “were very willing to give statements,” as part of an ongoing investigation led by Officer Jeffrey Picard.
Brooks said Parent would likely receive a summons for the charges today and be released on personal recognizance bail.
Both Lisbon fire companies responded to the crash. Traffic on Route 9 was reduced to one lane until the scene was cleared at around 5:30 p.m. Lisbon Police Lt. Daniel Michel also responded to the scene.
