TOPSHAM — Local veterans are invited to attend a Friday meeting about forming a Veterans Coordinating Committee for the Mid-coast region.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Friday at Topsham American Legion Post 202, 79 Foreside Road. If weather is bad, the meeting will be rescheduled.
William “Chick” Ciciotte, an American Legion spokesman, said that local people interested in creating a Veterans Coordinating Committee hope to interest enough veterans to have some “clout, so we can work on getting the Commissary back.”
Ciciotte said local veterans also want to explore obtaining the chapel on the former Navy base in Brunswick to serve as an area veterans center. The group has contacted Maine’s four congressional delegates about the latter effort, Ciciotte said. The delegation indicated it will at least send representatives to the meeting, according to Ciciotte.
American Legion representatives from Harpswell, Brunswick and Topsham, as well as some town officials and at least one Sagadahoc County commissioner plan to attend Friday’s meeting, according to Ciciotte.
