FALMOUTH – Taylor Landry scored her third goal of the game with 42.6 seconds left to lift Leavitt/Edward Little to a 4-3 win over Greely in an Eastern Maine girls’ high school hockey game Wednesday night at Family Ice.

The goal spoiled a furious Greely comeback. The Rangers (12-3) scored three times in a span of 3:14 late in the game to tie.

“I think we just got a little excited there and forgot about some D-zone responsibilities,” said Greely Coach Nate Guerin. “Actually the same thing happened the last time we played these guys (a 3-2 overtime loss Dec. 28). We came back in the last minute and went to OT. Then we lost in OT on a similar play with a girl by herself in front.”

Landry’s winner, her 30th goal of the season, came on a power play after a scramble. The Red Hornets (10-5) generated a couple of good chances, including one that forced goaltender Emma Seymour to make a dramatic game-saving pads save. But the rebound found Landry, who slid a shot along the ice and into the goal.

“It was really hard,” said Landry. “We regrouped (after Greely tied the game) and pushed and pushed. We wanted to win so bad we just went out there and showed them that we could win.”

Greely started its rally shortly after Emma Martineau gave the Red Hornets a 3-0 lead.

Mary Morrison started it when her shot from just inside the blue line found its way through traffic and beat goalie Tori Sanford high to the blocker side.

The Rangers started slow but carried play for most of the final two periods.

“We worked really hard the last two periods and once we got that one goal we kept on skating hard,” Morrison said. “We were confident we could make a comeback and we did. Even though it didn’t pay off in the end we were happy with what we did with three goals in the last six minutes.”

Greely continued to push following Morrison’s goal, and Paige Tuller and Chelsey Andrews scored 49 seconds apart to complete the comeback.

It was Landry who set the pace for the Red Hornets in the opening period, scoring early and late for a 2-0 lead. She started the period with an unassisted goal after 2:14 when she gained control in the neutral zone, broke by a defender and beat Seymour between the legs.

A Greely defensive zone turnover led to Landry’s second, a low shot that beat Seymour low to the glove side. Shaylin Collins picked up the assist on the power-play goal with 40 seconds left in the period.

Greely carried the play in the second period but was unable to break through. The Rangers saw a handful of chances either stopped by goalie Tori Sanford or blocked by her defense.

The Red Hornets led 2-0 heading into the third.

“The girls showed a lot of resolve,” said Guerin. “It was a chance for them to respond and they did a great job getting back into a 3-3 game. That was impressive.”
