AUGUSTA ( AP) — Gay marriage supporters collected more than 100,000 signatures, and they’re ready to announce whether they’re going to move forward with another referendum.
EqualityMaine, Maine Civil Liberties Union and the Maine Women’s Lobby will announce today whether they plan to deliver the petitions and carry through with a referendum. National gay-rights leaders, for their part, anticipate that a gay marriage campaign will be launched.
Maine is currently the only state in New England that doesn’t allow either gay marriage or civil unions.
The Maine Legislature previously approved gay marriage but it was rejected by a statewide referendum in 2009 by a vote of 53-47 percent.
