TOPSHAM
Topsham police continue to investigate a burglary at Rusty’s neighborhood grocery store in which a thief absconded with cash and cigarettes.
Lt. Christopher Lewis said the incident was reported to police at 6:41 a.m. Thursday by someone who stopped at the store, located at 2 Tedford Road, and noticed that a front window had been broken.
Lewis said an intruder used some sort of tool and damaged the door, seemingly to pry it open. After that effort apparently failed, the burglar smashed the smaller front window and crawled through.
The person took around $20 in petty cash and about $260 worth of cigarettes, then crawled back out through the window, according to police. Although located on Tedford Road, the store is highly visible from Route 24.
As of Tuesday, police had no suspects.
