NBA veteran Davis dropped from Red Claws’ roster
The Maine Red Claws waived veteran forward Ricky Davis on Saturday, at least temporarily ending his bid to get back into the NBA.
Davis, 32, averaged 8.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 11 games for the Red Claws.
The Red Claws will likely play with a nine-man roster for today’s home game against Erie. Forward Paul Harris is currently on the waived-due-to-injury list and cannot come off it until Monday.
Today’s game will start at noon to avoid a conflict with the AFC championship game.
Maine (7-16) has lost three in a row, including a 122-113 decision against Erie (10-12) on Friday.
FIGURE SKATING
U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Scarborough High freshman Morgan Sewall is scheduled to compete today and Monday in the U.S. championships at San Jose, Calif.
Sewall, 14, is the New England novice ladies champion and a member of the North Atlantic Figure Skating Club of Falmouth. She qualified for the national event by placing fourth at the Eastern Regionals in November in Jamestown, N.Y.
A two-time participant in the junior nationals as a juvenile and intermediate skater, Sewall is competing in her first season at the novice level.
GOLF
PGA: Play was suspended midway through the third round of the Humana Challenge after high winds caused damage on all three courses at La Quinta, Calif.
The tournament will resume this morning with Mark Wilson holding a three-stroke lead over Ben Crane.
Most of the golfers were past the turn in the third round when wind gusts of 35 mph blew balls off the greens, toppled a large scoreboard and wrecked an awning in the fan area.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Dan Forsman had six back-nine birdies for a 7-under 65 and a two-stroke after the second round of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.
Forsman had a 12-under 132 total. Brad Bryant (64), Tom Watson (65) and Jeff Sluman (66) were at 10 under.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts shot a 4-under 69 in windy conditions for a share of the third-round lead with South Africa’s Branden Grace in the Volvo Championships at George, South Africa.
SOCCER
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Clint Dempsey became the first American to score a hat trick in the Premier League in Fulham’s 5-2 win over Newcastle.
Elsewhere, fourth-place Chelsea squandered a chance to gain ground on the top three teams, drawing 0-0 at Norwich.
U.S. WOMEN: Amy Rodriguez tied a U.S. record with five goals, and the Americans routed the Dominican Republic 14-0 Friday night in their opening game of the Olympic qualifying tournament at Vancouver, British Columbia.
The most lopsided win in the U.S. women’s 27-year history was tempered by a right knee injury to defender Ali Krieger.
SKIING
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Tessa Worley of France won a giant slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, after first-run leader Elisabeth Goergl of Austria crashed at the end of the second run.
Lindsey Vonn finished fourth, making a spectacular recovery to prevent a crash near the end of the race.
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Didier Cuche of Switzerland earned a record fifth victory at Kitzbuehel, Austria, on one of the World Cup’s most challenging downhill courses.
Bode Miller barely avoided a crash in the icy lower section of the course and finished 29th.
SPEEDSKATING
WORLD CUP: Shani Davis of the U.S. won his first gold medal of the season at Kearns, Utah, and Canada’s Christine Nesbitt remained unbeaten this season in the women’s 1,000 meters.
