Wilson shoots 62 to move into tie atop leaderboard at Humana Challenge
Mark Wilson shot a 10-under 62 on Friday to tie Ben Crane and David Toms for the second-round lead in the Humana Challenge at La Quinta, Calif., topping a leaderboard again filled with blistering scores.
Crane shot a 63 on the three-course tournament’s Palmer Private course, and Toms had a 65 on the Nicklaus Private course to match Wilson at 16-under 128.
Harris English shot a 62 on the Nicklaus Private course to join five players in fourth place at 13 under.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Tom Lehman and Bruce Vaughan shot 7-under 65 to share the first-round lead in the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.
Brad Faxon, Loren Roberts, Corey Pavin, Jay Haas, Dan Forsman and Michael Allen were a stroke back.
EUROPEAN TOUR: South Africa’s Branden Grace moved closer to his second straight victory, shooting a 7-under 66 to take a four-stroke lead in the Volvo Golf Champions at George, South Africa.
Grace, who earned his first European Tour victory last week at the Joburg Open, had a 12-under 134 total. South Africa’s Thomas Aiken (70) and England’s Lee Slattery (65) were 8 under, and European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal (68) was another stroke back.
BASEBALL
MAJOR LEAGUES: With the future of the pitcher they knew only as Fausto Carmona unclear, the Cleveland Indians made a move to protect their rotation, acquiring right-hander Kevin Slowey from Colorado for minor league reliever Zach Putnam and cash considerations.
Indians General Manager Chris Antonetti claimed the deal was not a direct reaction to Carmona’s arrest in the Dominican Republic on charges the pitcher falsified his identity to play in the U.S. However, the timing of the trade seems to indicate the Indians don’t know if they’ll have Carmona this season.
The Indians also agreed to minor league contracts with outfielder Ryan Spilborghs and infielder Gregorio Petit.
• First baseman Carlos Pena agreed to a $7.25 million, one-year contract to return to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Pena played with the Rays from 2007-10, helping them reach the playoffs twice before signing as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs last season. He had 144 homers and 407 RBI during his four years in Tampa Bay.
• Catcher Chris Snyder agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Astros, a deal that includes a 2013 mutual option.
• Outfielder Michael Morse agreed to a two-year contract worth about $10.5 million with the Washington Nationals, avoiding arbitration.
• The Texas Rangers signed veteran first baseman/outfielder Brad Hawpe to a minor league contract.
• Right-handed reliever Sergio Romo and the San Francisco Giants settled on a $1,575,000, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration.
• Outfielder Brett Gardner and the New York Yankees agreed to a $2.8 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.
