CAPE ELIZABETH – Charlie Fay picked a pretty good time to make his presence felt.
The Falmouth junior scored seven straight points early in the fourth quarter to silence a Cape Elizabeth comeback and help the Yachtsmen beat the Capers 52-37 in a Western Maine Conference boys’ basketball game on Friday night.
“It was a nice feeling to have an impact like that,” said Fay, who finished with season-high 11 points. “It was really the first time I really had that big of an impact this year.
“It was a nice way to swing the game around.”
Fay’s individual run came after the Capers reduced a 10-point halftime deficit to a one point early in the fourth quarter.
The Cape rally started with a 10-2 run to open the third quarter and cut Falmouth’s lead to 30-28. The two teams traded points the rest of the quarter, leaving Falmouth (12-0) ahead 36-32 after three periods.
Henry Babcock opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to bring Cape (7-5) to within one.
Matt Packard answered with a 3-pointer of his own on the next possession to restore Falmouth’s four-point cushion. Kyle Snowden kept the pressure on for Cape with a basket to get his team within two, trailing 39-37 with 6:45 left in regulation.
“We got off to a good start and came out in the second half and they sort of brought the game back,” said Falmouth Coach Dave Halligan. “We didn’t panic. They got us out of our game and we weren’t running our stuff. Once we settled down (and got) back to what we do, we were fine.”
With momentum clearly on Cape’s side, Alex Cattel drained two clutch foul shots for Falmouth. Then Fay followed with his run, including a midcourt steal and uncontested basket, which completely closed out the game.
The Yachtsmen finished the game on a 13-0 run.
“Each time we’ve played Cape we’ve had one bad quarter,” said Packard, who led the Yachtsmen with 12 points. “Last time (a 60-37 season-opening victory) it was the second quarter and this time it was the third quarter. Coming out of that we were kind of angry at ourselves and coach kind of lit into us, so we were ready to start the fourth quarter.”
Early on it looked as if it was going to be a relatively easy night for the top-ranked Yachtsmen.
They fell behind 6-2 in the opening two minutes but rolled for the rest of the quarter and outscored the Capers 16-3 to open an 18-9 lead after one.
Falmouth pushed its lead to 12 points with a minute remaining in the first half and led 28-18 at the break.
“The way we started the game was completely 100 percent unacceptable,” said Cape Elizabeth Coach Jim Ray. “The nonchalant passes, there’s was no bounce in their step defensively, nobody was talking.
“I’m sorry. You’re not going to be successful against a team like Falmouth if you come out and play that way.”
Babcock scored a game-high 13 points for the Capers.
