BRUNSWICK – Dylan Towle had a hand in all three Brunswick tallies with a goal and two assists, and freshman Kyle Woodruff added a goal and an assist as the Dragons held off Mt. Ararat/Lisbon for 3-2 boys’ hockey victory Thursday at Watson Arena.

Towle netted the first goal with 2:49 left in the opening period, but it was Woodruff who did the dirty work.

Eagles goalie Zach O’Connor stopped Tyler Niven’s slap shot from the right point, with Woodruff in front of the crease looking for the rebound. He was knocked into O’Connor as he got off a shot, which the goalie also stuffed while being taken down in the collision. The puck caromed out to Towle, who deposited it in the open net.

“Just knowing where I’m supposed to be,” Towle said of the easy goal.

The second period was mostly a showcase for the goalies.

O’Connor stopped six shots during a busy power play before denying Jacob Parent twice and Towle once in close. Brunswick’s Blake Alexander came up with two saves on a wrist shot and follow-up bid by Jeremy Williams to preserve the lead.

The Dragons (5-4-1) were a man down when Towle broke up a pass at the blue line and pushed it ahead to Woodruff, who raced in alone and beat O’Connor with a backhand to the left side with 2:44 left in the second.

“I knew what I was going to do all along,” said Woodruff. “That’s my bread and butter.”

Brunswick made it 3-0 just over a minute into the third. Towle took a pass from Niven along the boards and fed Dwayne Palmer at the bottom of the right circle for the goal.

The Eagles (3-5) started their comeback when Williams took a pass from Ben Bishop, went in alone and lifted the puck over Alexander for a short-handed tally at 4:02. Evan Tome made it a one-goal game on a rebound with 2:48 remaining.

“We knew we were coming into the game short-handed, missing a couple key players,” said Brunswick Coach Mike Routhier, “so we needed some guys to step up, which they did.

“We played a good, simple game the first two periods, but then we got a little greedy and a little careless with puck management, and they took advantage.”

“I didn’t think we played badly the first two periods, even though they had more shots,” said Eagles Coach Mike Bishop. “We came out hard in the third, and I’m proud of our guys.”
