In this 1941 photo provided by the L.L. Bean Archive, Leon Leonwood Bean is seen with grandsons, from left, Leon Gorman, Jim Gorman and Tom Gorman, at Bean’s office in Freeport. In 1912, L.L. Bean sold his first pair of boots. The privately held company expects to have $1.5 billion in sales in its 2011 fiscal year. Leon Gorman went on to become the chairman of the board of the company.
