BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin outscored the University of Maine-Farmington 30-11 over the final nine minutes Wednesday to register an 84-79 men’s basketball victory.
UMF (7-6) led 68-54 with 8:50 to play when the Polar Bears (10-4) started to assert themselves. Bowdoin, forcing seven turnovers on Farmington’s next eight possessions, mounted a 20-4 run capped by Ryan O’Connell’s driving lay-in that gave Bowdoin a 74-72 lead with 3:10 to play. O’Connell scored nine points during the run.
The Polar Bears widened the lead to eight before Pet Sumner hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Beavers.
NEBRASKA 70, (11) INDIANA 69: Jorge Brian Diaz made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Nebraska (10-8, 2-5 Big Ten) a win over visiting Indiana (15-3, 3-4).
(12) MURRAY STATE 66, MOREHEAD STATE 60: Isaiah Canaan scored 20 points as Murray State (19-0, 7-0 Ohio Valley Conference) won at Morehead State (9-11, 3-4).
CINCINNATI 70, (13) UCONN 67: Sean Kilpatrick hit a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left to give Cincinnati (15-4, 5-1 Big East) a win over host Connecticut (14-4, 4-3).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
ST. JOSEPH’S (MAINE) 77, ST. JOSEPH’S (CONN.) 72: Ashley Geel scored 19 points as the Monks (10-5, 4-0) stretched their winning streak to six games with a GNAC victory over the Blue Jays (9-5, 2-3) in Standish.
The Monks led by 17 midway through the second half, but a 22-6 run by the Jays reduced the lead to just one point, 71-70, with 2:35 remaining. After a scoreless minute of play, Geel was fouled while making a layup and converted the three-point play for a 74-70 lead. The Monks added three more free throws in the final seconds for the win.
(1) BAYLOR 72, TEXAS TECH 64: Brittney Griner scored 21 points to lead Baylor (18-0, 5-0 Big 12) to a win at Texas Tech (14-3, 2-3).
Texas Tech cut the lead to 69-63 when Monique Smalls stole the ball from Odyssey Sims in the backcourt and made a layup with 1:12 remaining.
But Griner, who finished 7 of 16 from the field with eight blocks, hit a short jumper from the left side to put the Lady Bears back up by eight, 71-63, and seal the win.
(5) DUKE 79, GEORGIA TECH 62: Elizabeth Williams had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Richa Jackson added 17 points as visiting Duke (15-2, 5-0 ACC) topped Georgia Tech (13-6, 3-3) for its ninth straight win.
