STANDISH – Bonny Eagle, the fourth-ranked team in Western Class A, scored the first 14 points, led 20-1 after one quarter and breezed to a 46-28 victory against Windham in a Southern Maine Activities Association boys’ basketball game Tuesday night.
The heavily favored Scots (9-2) were looking for a fast start. Their swarming defense and fast-break offense, including four 3-pointers in the first quarter, had the Eagles (3-8) backpedaling.
“We got off to a slow start in our last game and wanted to go out fast in this game,” said Cole Libby of the Scots. “We talked about doing that before the game. We want to play quickly and force teams into playing quicker than they want to. When everyone plays their role, we usually do pretty well.”
Even though Bonny Eagle started slowly Friday night against Marshwood, it managed to pull out a one-point victory against a tourney-bound team.
Bonny Eagle’s only losses have been to Portland and Deering. It handed Cheverus its first loss.
The Scots were focused in the first half against Windham, but not as much in the second.
“We have to keep our foot on the pedal,” said Bonny Eagle Coach Phil Bourassa. “Windham is one of our rivals. We should play hard the whole game. In the first half we were crashing the offensive boards and getting second chances. We boxed out and allowed them only one shot.”
Bonny Eagle didn’t get its offense untracked until a few trips down the floor. Once it did, the game turned quickly.
“Everything starts with our defense,” said Libby.
Dustin Cole hit a 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key. He hit two free throws the next trip down the court. Libby scored to make it 7-0. Travon Dandridge hit a basket before Libby scored on a drive to make it 11-0 and bring a Windham timeout.
C.J. Autry greeted the Eagles’ return to the court with a 3-pointer to make it 14-0.
Pressured by the Scots, Windham got few good looks in the first half. The Eagles finally scored with 2:08 left in the quarter on a Spencer Hodge free throw.
After Autry’s 3, Dandridge and freshman Ben Malloy made 3s to close the quarter.
It didn’t get much better for the Eagles in the second quarter. They were outscored 14-4 to trail 34-5 at the half. Dylan Weisser scored the Eagles’ first basket with 5:02 left before the half and added another basket for all of his team’s points in the quarter.
“Bonny Eagle is a quick team,” said Windham Coach Kevin Millington. “They all can shoot the 3-pointer and they play sound defense. They make you work for every shot. My kids played hard. This is only the second game we’ve been blown out. All the others have been competitive in the fourth quarter.”
Windham lost its best player and last year’s league MVP, Nolan Allen, to a knee injury during the football season. Millington said the team has come together.
Cole led Bonny Eagle with 13 points and Libby added eight. Both saw limited action after the first half.
