It is unfortunate that the MaineToday Media Editorial Board used the Martin Luther King holiday to once again make its own bias against Gov. LePage so patently obvious (Our View, “Gov. LePage should go to NAACP breakfast,” Jan. 13).
The board’s own commentary – pulling from an event long past and stating that our governor is “dividing the state into friends and enemies,” pits one side against the other and blames one group for the problems of the rest – is in itself divisive and further serves to agitate and inflame.
These mean-spirited comments are ironic, given that the governor did the right thing and attended a Martin Luther King breakfast celebration in Waterville (instead of Portland).
The Editorial Board might want to consider that the Waterville Rotary Club has sponsored and celebrated the Martin Luther King breakfast since this holiday was first observed in 1986.
The board might want to consider that Gov. LePage was a longtime member of the Waterville Rotary Club prior to becoming Maine’s governor. The board might want to consider that Gov. LePage still calls Waterville his hometown and spends time in Waterville when possible.
The board might want to consider that the Waterville Rotary Club is one of the most respected and strongest clubs in its district for what it does both locally and worldwide.
As a past Rotary president (1988-’89), hosting one of the earliest – if not the earliest – Martin Luther King breakfast events in the state, I would suggest that perhaps both the governor and representatives of the NAACP come and join next year’s Martin Luther King celebration here in Waterville.
This would be my suggestion. It would then allow the Editorial Board no cause to speculate as to what the governor’s motives are when its own are in question.
