More than 250 people met at St. Mary of the Assumption church for a Roman Catholic Mass and prayer service Saturday morning before holding a rally at a nearby parish gymnasium. They then marched to the State House, where participants joined hands and encircled the building.
During the ceremony, a bell rang 39 times, once for each year since the Supreme Court legalized abortion with its Roe v. Wade decision.
Prominent anti-abortion leaders and a state legislator spoke at the rally, as did Gov. Paul LePage, who spoke briefly about friends and family and the importance of taking care of one another.
“It’s good we get together from time to time to care about life,” LePage said.
The event is Maine’s largest anti-abortion gathering and draws people from around the state, said Teresa McCann-Tumidajski, executive director of the Maine Right to Life Committee, which organizes the event.

It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
