LISBON — The Lisbon Police Department invites residents to sign up for another Citizens Police Academy that starts Feb. 23 and runs until May 3.
The classes will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the Lisbon Police Department.
The Citizen’s Police Academy provides community members with an inside look at the police department and all facets of law enforcement, according to the academy announcement. While the curriculum and teaching methods are similar to those of a more traditional law enforcement academy, the weekly sessions are “ not designed to make the participant a law enforcement officer,” but to provide an overview of the department’s policies and procedure.
During the 10-week academy, students will be introduced to department operations. Topics include law enforcement ethics, criminal law, investigations, patrol procedures, communications, drug enforcement and drug education.
As part of the curriculum, students will be scheduled to ride along with a police officer. The classes are taught by Lisbon police officers, and participants will have the opportunity to meet with the police chief and staff members.
Course subjects will focus on an overview of the criminal justice system and patrol procedures; conduct and ethics; the canine program; domestic violence; operating under the influence enforcement; accident investigation; and crime scene investigation.
“The Lisbon Police Department hopes there will be a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s role in community through the education provided by the Citizen’s Police Academy,” the announcement states.
Potential candidates for the Citizen’s Police Academy must live and work in Lisbon or the surrounding area; have no prior felony convictions; and have no misdemeanor arrests within one year of application. Any of these requirements may be waived by Police Chief David Brooks.
Space is limited. Applications are available online at www.LisbonPD.com or www.lisbonme.org, as well as at the police department. Completed forms can be mailed to the Lisbon Police Department, care of Sergeant Stewart, 300 Lisbon St., Lisbon, ME 04250.
