PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra’s (PSO) Tuesday Classical concert on Jan. 24 features three works by two composers who were each deeply inspired by their homelands, according to a PSO release.

The concert features guest conductor Christopher Warren Green and violinist Steven Moeckel, and will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium, 20 Myrtle St.

The evening’s program opens with Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ Karelia Suite. Composed in 1893, when Sibelius was 28 years old, the suite was commissioned by the University of Helsinki in tribute to the history and traditions of Karelia, Finland.

The second piece in the evening’s concert is also by Sibelius, his Violin Concerto featuring Steven Moeckel as the guest soloist.

“ The composer’s passion for the violin is made clear with this work, the only concerto he ever wrote,” the release states.

The final work on the program is Anton Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, “an emotionallycharged work celebrating the composer’s love of Bohemia, his homeland,” the release states. “This melodic work evokes both rustic spirit and romance.”

Conductor Christopher Warren-Green is music director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and music director and principal conductor of the London Chamber Orchestra. He recently made his debut with the Detroit Symphony, conducting Handel’s Messiah, and will conduct the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic and the Sapporo Symphony orchestras in 2011-12.

Warren-Green has a long history of conducting for the royal family of Great Britain, most recently at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Violinist Steven Moeckel has performed throughout Europe, South America and the U. S. His notable U. S. appearances include chamber music performances with Leon Fleisher and Menachem Pressler at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival and concerto appearances in repertoire ranging from the Brahms Double Concerto with cellist Andres Diaz to the dazzling Red Violin Concerto of John Corigliano.

A concert conversation is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. The PostConcert Q& A on stage with the artists will be followed by a casual gathering at the nearby restaurant, Grace. This concert will be broadcast on MPBN’s “Maine Stage” at 8 p.m. Feb. 8.
