BIDDEFORD — It was a fitting and stylish way to reach a milestone.

C.J. Maksut scored on a short-handed breakaway with 4.7 seconds remaining in the second period to tie the Thornton Academy career scoring record, adding a little history to a resounding 7-1 triumph over Scarborough Wednesday at Biddeford Ice Arena.

Maksut racked up three points ”“ two goals and an assist, all of which came in the second period ”“ to tie Matt Brennick’s 11-year-old record of 111 points.

“I think it’s pretty cool to be a part of Thornton Academy history,” Maksut said. “But like I’ve said before, it’s really the guys who play around me that make it possible for me. I really attribute it to them.”

Coming as it did, against the previously unbeaten Red Storm (7-1-1) in what was something of a “statement” game, made the occasion sweeter for the swift and skilled forward, he said.

“We knew it was going to be a big game against an undefeated team,” said Maksut. “So we wanted to play three complete periods. I think we did that.”

Indeed, Maksut had plenty of company in the Trojan scoring parade.

Second line center Andrew Carignan also netted two goals, while Maksut’s linemate, Bryan Dallaire racked up four points with three assists and a goal.

“We executed well,” said Dallaire. “All our passes were crisp.”

That included those dished off by Dallaire, which led to Trojan tallies.

The first of those came on Robbie Downing’s goal, which opened the scoring at 5:14 of the first period.

Dallaire outworked a Red Storm defender to grab a puck along the boards, then laced it out to Downing, who shot it from the right circle.

“I turned and saw the defender coming at me, so I dished it to (Downing),” Dallaire said. “He made a nice bury.”

The Trojans (6-1) carried that slim margin into the second period, then erupted for five goals and took a 6-1 lead.

Carignan lit the fuse with a short-handed goal at 1:09 that made it 2-0.

Maksut, who began the night with 108 points, earned a point when he assisted, along with Dallaire, on Nick Chen’s power play tap-in at the 5:00 mark.

“It’s fun,” said Dallaire, of sharing the ice with Maksut. “He knows where to go when I get the puck, and (when) he gets the puck, I know where to go. We have chemistry, I think. We just bond really well.”

Maksut’s second point came at 6:12, when he cashed in Downing’s cross-crease pass to make it 4-0.

Then, while the Trojans were killing off a last-minute penalty, Maksut completed his momentous night with a rink-length dash that began as a feed from Dallaire.

“He is such an unbelievable player with the puck,” said Maksut of Dallaire. “I trusted him, and took off hoping he’d see me. He looked up, we made eye contact and made a beautiful saucer pass. It landed right on my stick.

“I actually thought I was running out of time, so I wanted to get (my shot) off quickly. I happened to get it, but it was Dallaire’s pass that made it.”

Dallaire finished the scoring himself early in the third period.

Maksut’s first opportunity to break the record will come Saturday when Thornton will hosts Waterville at BIA.
