BANGOR ( AP) — The Maine medical examiner’s office says a man who died at a Bangor hospital last summer is the state’s first confirmed death as a result of an overdose of the drug known as bath salts.

An office official said Wednesday that 32-year-old Ralph Willis died at Eastern Maine Medical Center after consuming a “toxic level” of MDPV, a key ingredient of bath salts.

Police said last July that Willis was delusional when he was found running around and yelling at people.

He was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest.

Officials tell the Bangor Daily News that Willis was so intoxicated he stopped breathing in jail and was resuscitated before being taken to the hospital.

Bath salts can cause disorientation, extreme paranoia and violence.
