FREEPORT — The Cumberland and Sagadahoc County domestic violence prevention agency Family Crisis Services will host a special photo and poetry exhibit at the Freeport Community Library during the month of January.
The exhibit “More than a Rap Sheet: The Real Stories of Incarcerated Women,” will be on display through Jan. 30. It features poems written by women incarcerated at Cumberland County Jail and Maine Correctional Center.
According to a Family Crisis Services press release, 95 percent of the women in those prisons have experienced domestic violence in their lifetimes.
An official opening for the exhibit is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Some of the poets and Family Crisis Services staff members are scheduled to discuss the story behind the exhibit and read poems.
The exhibit also features portrait photographs of the incarcerated poets, taken by Christine Heinz of the Portland-based SALT Institute for Documentary Studies.
The library is located at 10 Library Drive. The phone number is 865-3307.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
