BANGOR — The Novel Jazz Septet is scheduled to perform at the Gracie Theater in Bangor at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The ensemble will play a show titled “Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn: Sacred and Secular — A Life Mix.”

“Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn are ranked as two of the most influential composers of the 20th century, between them composing (more than) 3,000 works,” a Novel Jazz Septet states. “ While many are aware of their popular secular music, most don’t realize that they wrote deeply moving sacred music, as well. Indeed, Ellington often reflected that his sacred concerts were the most important thing that he ever composed.”

Tuesday’s show will focus on compositions from both Ellington’s sacred concerts as well as a mix of their jazz standards.

The band features Barney Balch ( trombone), Bruce Boege (tenor sax), Michael Mitchell ( trumpet), Herb Maine (bass), Mickey Felder (piano), David Clarke (guitar) and Bill Friederich (drums).

The Gracie Theater is located at 1 College Circle, Bangor. The evening is being sponsored by the Bangor Theological Seminary.
