AUGUSTA (AP) — An attorney for a former Chelsea selectwoman accused of accepting kickbacks from a plowing contractor in exchange for getting him work with the town says he is working with federal prosecutors on a possible settlement.
Attorney Leonard Sharon was in Kennebec County Superior Court on Wednesday with Carole Swan, the former board chairwoman, for a hearing regarding pending state charges.
The 53-year-old Swan has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated forgery, attempted theft from the town and improper compensation for services. She is free on bail.
Sharon tells the Kennebec Journal he is hoping to come to an agreement with the federal prosecutor prior to any indictment being brought in federal court.
If federal charges are brought, state charges would be dismissed.
